Debunking Common Myths about Freemasonry

By Christopher Hodapp

Modern Freemasonry has been around since 1717. The first concocted untruths about the Order appeared in print at almost the same time. The United States was consumed by anti-Masonic hysteria in the late 1820s, and Europe has made Mason-bashing a popular sport for two centuries, often tying it to anti-Semitic propaganda. The Internet has only served to resurrect these myths, as they get dragged out and repeated all over again. Here are some of the most common ones.

The lodge goat

Freemasons do not ride a goat in their lodges. It's a joke, perpetrated often by Masons themselves on nervous initiates.
Since at least the Middle Ages, the goat has been symbolic of the devil, and stories were circulated then of witches who called forth Satan, who came riding into town on a goat to take part in their blasphemous orgies. Then, as the Freemasons gained in popularity, detractors accused them of witchcraft, which is probably where the notion of initiates riding a goat came from.

It didn't help that some early ritual books from the fraternity referred to God as "God of All Things" and abbreviated it as G.O.A.T. That was quickly changed, and God is now referred to by Masons by the acronym G.A.O.T.U., for Grand Architect of the Universe.

Old catalogs from fraternal supply companies in the late 1800s actually offered mechanical goats for use in other fraternal organizations and "fun" degrees. As the golden age of fraternalism resulted in literally hundreds of other groups popping up in competition with the Masons, some were obviously less serious than others. Such items only served to perpetuate the myth that Masons and other fraternities required a goat-ride ritual for their initiations. Freemasonry never has.

Rest assured: There is no lodge goat. The degrees of Masonry are serious business to Freemasons, and there is no horseplay (or goatplay).

The All-Seeing Eye and the U.S. $1 bill

If you saw the movie National Treasure, you know all about this one. The back of the U.S. $1 bill contains Masonic imagery of the All-Seeing Eye over an Egyptian pyramid. And everybody knows that's a Masonic symbol, right?
Well, not really. The eye and the pyramid are actually part of the Great Seal of the United States, which was put on the back of the $1 bill in 1935. There is indeed an All-Seeing Eye floating over an unfinished pyramid, with the words annuit coeptis (Latin meaning, "He [God] has favored our undertakings").

Beneath it are the words, novus ordo seclorum, which translate as "A new order of the ages." It does not mean "a new world order," as has been alleged, which is just one more reason to lament that high schools don't teach Latin classes anymore. (New world order would be written as novus ordo mundi. So there. Now go conjugate ten irregular verbs.)
A committee of four men, including Benjamin Franklin (the only Freemason in the bunch), designed the Great Seal of the United States in 1776. The image of the eye within a triangle to represent God was suggested by the only artist among them, Pierre du Simitiere — who was not a Freemason. Two other committees tinkered with the design before being approved. The unfinished pyramid was suggested by Francis Hopkinson (another non-Mason), and none of the final designers was a Mason.

The eye within a triangle to represent God appears throughout the Renaissance, long before speculative Freemasonry arrived on the scene. The triangle being three-sided represents the Christian belief in the Trinity of God — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. No records associate Freemasonry with the symbol before 1797, nor is the symbol in any way related to the Bavarian Illuminati.

As for the unfinished pyramid, it represents the strong, new nation of the United States, destined to stand for centuries, just as the famous pyramids have stood in Egypt. There are 13 rows of stones, representing the 13 original colonies, with the image of God watching over them.

Many Masonic lodges, especially in Europe, display the All-Seeing Eye just as it is used on the $1 bill — as a nondenominational representation of God. There is nothing sinister or occult about it, and there are numerous instances of it appearing in Christian art from the 1600s onward.

The Masonic bible

Masons have been accused of using their own, presumably Satanic, bible in their ceremonies. Many people have seen Masonic bibles for sale on eBay and elsewhere and clearly believe that Bibles used by Masons are somehow different.
This myth is actually a two-part one. Lodges in predominantly Christian communities commonly have the custom of presenting the new Master Mason with a commemorative heirloom Bible. In the United States, the most common one is the 1611 translation of the King James version, published especially for Masonic lodges by Heirloom Bible Publishers of Wichita, Kansas. It contains an area in the front for the Mason to commemorate important dates in his degree work, places for his brethren to sign the record of his degrees, and a 94-page glossary of biblical references relating to Masonic ceremonies, along with essays about Masonry and some common questions and answers. The rest of it is the entire King James version of the Old and New Testament that is available in any bookstore.

The second part of this myth has to do with the use of the Volume of Sacred Law in a Masonic lodge. All regular, well-governed lodges must have a book considered sacred to its members open on the lodge altar during meetings. Depending on what part of the world the lodge is in and the beliefs of the lodge's members, this sacred book could be the Bible, the Hebrew Tanach, the Muslim Koran, the Hindu Veda, the Zoroastrian Zend-Avesta, or the Proverbs of Confucius. It's simply referred to as the Volume of Sacred Law, as a nonsectarian term.

In the lodges that operate within the Grand Orient of France, atheists are allowed to join. The Grand Orient believes that a man's religious beliefs — or lack of them — are his own business and that it's improper for their lodges to require him to believe in anything. Furthermore, instead of filling up their altars with many sacred books to satisfy members of many faiths, their lodges are allowed to substitute a book with blank pages as their Volume of Sacred Law, so as not to force any religious beliefs on any of their members. Remember: The Grand Orient of France is considered irregular and is unrecognized by mainstream Grand Lodges around the world. Even so, a blank book is no Masonic Bible either.

From the gold of Rennes-le-Château to the descendants of Merovaeus

Foreword by Claude Jacquemart

At the heart of one of France’s oldest regions, scorched by the sun and shaded by the Pyrenees, rests an immense and fabulous treasure. Long ago, hordes of warriors such as Carthaginians, planning to destroy Rome by outflanking it over the Alps, Visigoths, Saracens, and Aragonese, crossed this land called the Razès - at times coming from the North and at other times from the South. The Razès was home to the large city of Reda with its defensive walls and towers. In the 6th Century A.D., the kings of the Visigoths had made it one of their two capitals, the other one being Toledo, in Spain. Reda has disappeared, wiped out by Spanish troops led by Henri de Trastamare. In its place, there is now a small village called Rennes-le-Château. It is not an ordinary village and therein lies the clue to the treasure – both material and spiritual. Many have searched for the treasure of Rennes-le-Château; others are still looking for it. One person, a priest, who lived at the end of the 19th Century and beginning of 20th Century, found it, in part. His name was Bérenger Saunière, parish priest of Rennes-le-Château.

What Bérenger Saunière discovered is now safeguarded in a strongroom in the basement of a curious villa in Switzerland. But this material treasure is only one of the aspects of the dormant secret in the Razès Mountains. This secret, revealed little by little, is that of the descendants of Merovaeus, the first kings who reigned over France. History wiped them out with Childéric III, deposed in 752 A.D.. However, the dynasty of Merovaeus and Clovis did not perish. With its roots in the Razès region, it is still alive, as many claim their ancestry to the circle and fleur-de-lis represented on the coat of arms of the counts of Reda, heirs to the Merovingian blood. They appropriated Nostradamus’ prediction “From a circle, from a lis, a great Prince will be born…” To serve them, a mysterious society was created and took the name of Priory of Sion. Its initiator was Godefroy de Bouillon, King of Jerusalem and descendant of Merovaeus.

This is the obscure and bloody story we have chosen to relate. We are not the only ones fascinated by the treasures buried away in the Razès region. Before and after Bérenger Saunière, many tenacious researchers have tried to unravel the mystery. Some lost their lives in their quest, others, only a little luckier, lost their minds. There is a wealth of literature surrounding this astonishing affair. Initially, there were chronicles left at a local level in the Languedoc libraries. Then, writers came along, like the Marquis Philippe de Cherisey with Circuit or Gérard de Sède with his book Les Templiers sont parmi nous (The Templars are Amongst Us), followed by L’or de Rennes (The Gold of Rennes).

Two events fascinated us in this strange affair.

The first was an article published in the daily newspaper La Dépêche du Midi in December 1972 which related that researchers, believed to be Israeli, had started some excavations around Rennes-le-Château. In what way could the Razès region be of any interest to geologists from Israel? Let’s think. In 70 A.D., Titus and his legions took Jerusalem at the end of one of the most atrocious sieges in history. However, the treasure of Solomon and its main piece, the gold seven-branched candlestick so valuable to the Jews which Tradition says was created on the instructions of Yahweh Himself, was rescued from the blazing fire. The spoils of this pillage were taken to Rome. At the beginning of the 5th Century, the Visigoths of Alaric captured and ransacked Rome and the treasure of Jerusalem fell into their hands. When they settled in Spain and southern France, they hid their plunder in two capital cities, Toledo and Reda. Amongst the treasures was the self-same seven-branched candlestick from the Temple of Solomon. Jews are possibly the most mystical people on earth. During nineteen centuries, they dreamt of Palestine and could not rest until they were returned to it. Since 1967, when they reconquered Jerusalem, the Israeli have been proclaiming they would be prepared to negotiate everything to establish peace with their Arab neighbours; everything other than their authority over Jerusalem, the Holy City and historic capital of the Hebrew nation. Agents sent to Languedoc by the Israeli services to find the seven-branched candlestick will only appear as a foolish hypothesis to those unaware of the Jews’ deeply held motivations.

The second event that aroused our interest was a file that Jean-Luc Chaumeil gave us at the end of 1972. He was young and passionate and, day after day, had roamed the tormented mountains of the Corbières region, interrogated the ruins and cemeteries, and met with the better-informed on the enigma of Rennes-le-Château. He told us, ‘I know where the treasure items discovered by Father Saunière are kept. I have seen them. I was allowed to photograph them. I found out also that there is an occult society which knows the secret of Rennes-le-Château and preserves it in the shadows as well as being focused on the realisation of their mysterious objectives…’

The Israeli investigation in Languedoc and the case of Jean-Luc Chaumeil, supported by very convincing photographic evidence, were sufficient reasons for us also to take an interest in the Razès and its amazing past.

The treasure hunt

On 10th December 1972, the daily newspaper La Dépêche du Midi of Toulouse published the following lines “But what were the four men staying in an inn on the Carcassonne to Limoux road doing, last autumn; leaving in a jeep every morning at dawn and returning at nightfall exhausted and covered in mud? The hotel records mentioned that they were geologists. The samples and specimens from their core drilling of the lands were apparently destined for a foreign petroleum company. Although they spoke impeccable French, when they were amongst themselves they shared an idiom that was difficult to identify. Thanks to a person who had lived a long time in Tel-Aviv and had overheard one of their conversations, it appeared that they were Israeli researchers. The event was even more puzzling as no petroleum concession had been granted to a foreign company in the region. Therefore, what were they doing in Rennes-le-Château? What if they were secret Israeli agents?”

Everything that concerns the village of Rennes-le-Château is cloaked in mystery. A legend has been associated with it for centuries; that of a treasure, or several treasures, supposedly buried in or around the village. This legend is not without foundation as a local priest, Bérenger Saunière, revealed part of it at the end of the 19th Century. Rennes-le-Château, in the Cathars’ territory of the upper Aude valley, is a little village of two hundred inhabitants perched on the top of a hill in front of the Black Mountain. Going up the river Aude towards the Pyrenees, the traveller crosses vast Dionysian valleys where vines stretch away as far as the eye can see. In the distance, one can see the crenellated walls of Carcassonne; the manifestation of a grandiose and dramatic Middle Ages. In the south, the Pyrenees dominate like imaginary castles. There, in the Razès, the fertile plains stop not far from the headspring of the river Aude where the countryside is nothing but red ochre against a pure sky, and it is in this rocky region that the grapes for Corbières wine ripen. Here and there, castles in ruins can be seen amongst the stones and bushes. They bear witness to the flamboyant past of the area which belonged, some fifteen hundred years ago, to the barbaric kingdom of the Visigoths. In the north, we have the towns of Limoux and Carcassonne, to the east Perpignan, and to the west Foix. This is the southern boundary of the old Albigensian territory. Forty kilometres to the south east of Foix as the crow flies, about eight centuries ago, the crusaders of Simon de Montfort, escorted by their inquisitors, went across that land wiping out in the blazing fire of Montségur the remaining witnesses of the Cathars’ religion, strange men who were called “the Perfects”. Going south from Limoux, past the towns of Alet-les-Bains and Montazels, a deep road with the peak of Cardou on its left and the rock of Blanchefort on its right, leads to Rennes-les-Bains, a small thermal town that is still surrounded by megalithic walls. South of Montazels, a sinuous road, dangerous and buzzing with cicadas, takes you to Rennes-le-Château. Positioned like a tiered cake on the plateau, the village is a belvedere over the two equally beautiful valleys of the Aude and the Sals. On one side, the eye embraces the country villages of Lavaldieu and Bezu where the Templars kept three commanderies; on the other side it envelops Arques and the ruins of Coustaussa which, as the name implies, is the custodian and vigilant guardian of these wild places. The origin of Rennes-le-Château is so ancient and so mysterious that historians and archaeologists dare not advance a date. Father Mazières, in his work on the Venue et séjour des templiers à la fin du XIIIè siècle et au début du XIVè siècle dans la vallée du Bézu (Arrival and Sojourn of the Templars at the End of the 13th Century and Beginning of 14th Century in the Valley of Bézu) merely notes that the region of the Razès became famous because of its legends, its traditions, its secrets, its enigmas and a great number of discoveries, some of which were sensational.

Rennes-le-Château, once upon a time called “Rhedae”, derives its name from the Visigothic word “Rheda”, meaning chariot. Very quickly, the area developed economically. The ferruginous springs and cold salt marshes of Rennes-les-Bains were exploited from ancient times for their therapeutic virtues. A Neolithic ossuary discovered in the last century indicates that the land was inhabited long before our era. Iberian tribes settled there, followed in the 4th Century B.C., by the Redone people from Belgium. In his work Mémoires de l’Histoire du Languedoc (Memoirs on the History of Languedoc), the historian Guillaume de Catel relates that the Romans also settled in this area, not because of its beauty as it is not blessed in that regard by nature, but for its profusion of diverse minerals. Indeed, besides the great mineralogical and hydrographical resources, the Razès has numerous deposits of amber, jet, iron, sulphur, silver and gold. The region owes its early development to the exploitation of these resources. The Roman road that crosses it to Spain was later used by pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela, and luxurious thermal baths for wealthy sick people were built in Rennes-les-Bains.

However, it is especially around the subject of its gold that the history of Rennes-le-Château becomes blurred. In 410 A.D., Alaric the Ancient, King of the Visigoths, ransacked and pillaged Rome. Amidst the plunder was the treasure from the Temple of Jerusalem, stolen by Titus in 70 A.D., with the famous gold seven-branched candlestick. In the 5th Century, the Visigoths conquered Languedoc and kept their plunder in two places. The Kings’ personal items were secured in Toulouse, whilst the ancient treasure from the spoils of war was held in Carcassonne. In 507 A.D., Clovis, King of the Franks, conquered and pillaged the city of Toulouse. The old treasure in Carcassonne was safeguarded thanks to the intervention of Theodoric the Great, King of the Ostrogoths in Italy. In the 7th Century, the Franks swept through the Languedoc region once more. The Frankish historian Fredeguaire relates that, after the capture of Narbonne, they found only ‘sixty chalices, fifteen patens and twenty chains’. The Visigoths hid part of their ancient treasure near Toledo. From that moment, their power was restricted to the Razès region. Reda grew in importance and it became a diocesan capital. Today, only a village remains from the unassailable fortified city of Reda, which became one of the capitals of the kings of the Visigoths in the 6th Century, the other being Toledo, and which gave its name to Rhedesium, or the county of Razès. In 1361, Reda was completely destroyed by the Aragonese troops of Henri de Trastamare. This represents, therefore, the geographical setting and first historical context regarding Rennes-le-Château and the Razès. We will see later that many more well known and secret events in the history of France are linked to this village and region.

Prologue to "Awaken : The Message" a real-life account : By Donny Gillson

written : by Donny Gillson (Notes) on Thursday, March 10, 2011 at 12:17pm
Hello All,

I wanted to get this information out and please excuse any typos and sentence structure; however, I just sat down and let the fingers do the talking. What I am about to reveal to everyone are occurrences that have happened over the past 10 years; however, this is just a draft. This will be the prologue to my upcoming book entitled "Awaken : The Message"..

There is so much information that I need to tell. It is just going to take several sessions of typing to pound out the entire story once and for all. Here is a sneak peak I hope you will enjoy...

There has been an occurrence that has been weighing on my mind since the summer of 2010 that I would like to share with my friends here on Facebook. I guess the best way to begin is to summarize an event that happened to be over the course of several months back in 2002 in Eugene, Oregon. I have written my accounts to this in a fictional (real-life) story entitled "Awakening : The Message"; however, I feel it is time to go more in depth of what I experienced and what it means today.

On Feb 20th, 2002 I can recall going into see my psychologist where I started telling him about a vision that I was having that was very extensive, comprehensive, and apocalyptic. I was dabbling in automatic writing at the time and had many strange occurrences that would bend what we call reality. During the course of that week I started seeing things that I could not explain; for instance, I remember walking into a bookstore and seeing people slightly shift in there appearances and would not explain why I was seeing such things. I can also recall walking into a restaurant and the sense of non-audible voices where coming through my brain which I started to interpret as possible telepathic communication.

As detailed in my book "Awaken : The Message", I felt as though was communicating with either an inter-dimensional being or possibly a extra terrestrial communication from the Hollow Earth of a place called Telos. I felt as though I was going completely mad; in fact, this is exactly what took place and I ended up in a hospital for psychiatric evaluation. During the evaluation no psychiatrist or medical staff could pin point what was happening to me. My visions and vivid dreams started to get more intense and the visions I started seeing where most incredible.

Throughout my whole life my family has been involved with the occult and paranormal activity. I even saw my first UFO at the age of seven years old while walking from my home to a friends house on a fall evening in late October. It was a cylinder type craft that hovered above me for several minutes and then like suddenly disappeared like it cloaked right there in the sky. ere have also been several instances where I have blacked out or have had concussions where I can not recall things that have happened; for instance, I was in Boston, Mass when I was driving home from a friends house and the next thing I know I am over 60 miles from my destination and have no recollection of how I got there. It almost seemed as though time stopped and I was transported to somewhere; I have always wondered if this may have been my first abduction. I just can not explain it.

Over the past several years I have been witness to space and time bending right in front of my face. I have kept it silent in fear that people may of thought that I was a madman or even worse someone they should be afraid of. There are way to many instances to describe and even as I write this testimony I can feel my self overwhelmed by emotion. I was recently asked by a dear friend to recall my experiences with the paranormal which leads me to what happened to me this past summer. It all started around the end of April in 2010. I started feeling very anxious, manic, and a bit paranoid. I was becoming more and more awake. I started delving into sacred magic and other occult practices that I had no understanding in. I started exploring the Hermetic Order of The Golden Dawn, The OTO, and other magical societies. I actually was inititated into the Golden Dawn and feel that it took me up until now to put together the shatter soul that caused my experiences last spring and summer.

Right around the end of June of 2010 I really started seeing strange things in the sky. I recall standing in downtown Saint Paul right after a major thunderstorm and looking up in the sky and I saw a object flying low over my head without any sound. As I watched it bank off to the left it started to descend right in front of me about 200-300 yards from my field of view. I could feel this sense of wonderment come over my entire body as I saw the image of the entire craft start to fully uncloak. Now, I swear on my life this thing looked just like the imperial space shuttle from Empire Strikes Back. The crafts wings started to come down and it started to make a landing near I-35 in lower town Saint Paul.

At this time I started to somewhat freak out and started thinking about my research in Project Blue Beam and other governmental projects that I had been exposing fairly boldly of Facebook over the years. I began to walk towards where I thought the craft had landed and I could not see anything; it had disappeared. I then started walking back home and a strange emotional response came over to me to stop by a restaurant near my home just a few blocks from where I saw this craft land. As, I walked into the bar/restaurant I started to look around and suddenly this young woman approached me and her name was Dana. We sat and talked for a few moments and she proceeded to walk back to her table. I did not think anything of it and as I was walking out the door I heard someone yell out my name "DONNY". I looked and there I saw someone that I did not know.  I proceeded to walk over to her and this young black woman started to say "You are on the right track Donny"; right after this young lady said this Dana walked up to the table. Now, the very odd thing about all of this is this person; along with, Dana did not know my name for I did not give it.

Dana, her friend, and I talked for a few moments off topic and I proceeded to give Dana my phone number and I walked away and went home. A few days later is when things got very interesting. I awoke from a very intense nightmare covered in sweat. I jumped in the shower and got dressed. I had this overwhelming feeling to get outside like something very important was about to happen. It was about 5am in the morning and I started walking through downtown Saint Paul. The Sun had not risen yet and the clouds from the overnight thunderstorm where breaking away. I started feeling very manic and anxious almost like I felt back in Oregon in 2002; which lead me into the hospital. I started to breathe slowly and the walk to helping me bring this mania down; however, I started hearing this soft sounds in my head. Again, like something was communicating with me via telepathy. I looked up in the sky and all of a sudden I saw the clouds break and there I saw an image of a being cloaked with its arms extended out and a large triangle on its cloak. It was the most amazing thing I had ever witnessed and I felt this incredible surge of energy come over me. I fumbled for my camera phone and took a shot.

The second after I took this photo the being disappeared into the clouds. Next, the sun started to come up and I felt this urge come over me that I needed to get to the top of Cathedral Hill to witness the sun coming up for at that moment I would see images that would clarify what I was feeling.

The minute I got to the top of the hill I could see the eyes of Isis coming out of the clouds; along with, angelic formed clouds which I started taking photos of each minute the sun came up a different image was being produced it was absolutely incredible. I was starting to freak out a little bit but was taking it all in as well as any person could after such an experience. After I watched this amazing sunrise I started to take a long walk and as I was walking down by the Mississippi River I started to hear an engine of a plane. Now, we I do live by two airports here in Saint Paul; however, this plane that I saw was no plane that I had ever seen before in my life. It was like a sterling silver metallic single prop plane. It had markings on the side which I could not make out; however, towards the end of the tail it had a large square the was hollow and you could see right through it. The plane started to head towards a cloud formation and entered it but never came out the other side. I could still hear the engine sound but could not visually see the plane anywhere in the sky. It was like it cloaked the minute it went into the sky.

I kept asking myself what the hell is happening to me. I really was starting to freak out; however, I kept praying that there was a reason why I was experiencing what these things and to keep myself as leveled as I could. That evening I headed to the my weekly Masonic fellowship at my Lodge in Saint Paul. Right after our meeting some of the brothers and I stepped outside of the Lodge and we all witnessed a craft hovering over our Lodge. It looked the an orange sphere and some of the brothers thought it might have been a hot air balloon; however, this craft was hovering and moving to fast for any type of hot air balloon; to this day no one knows what it was and it disappeared as quickly as it appeared. Now, I really started thinking about there must be something happening here either I am really freaking out or I am being contacted by something not of this world.

That weekend I went for a long walk. I started feeling very energized and seeking out answers to these questions. I ended up at this bar called the Lucky 13 in Mendota Heights, Minnesota. I was drinking a glass of water and this older woman kept staring at me. I proceeded over to speak with her and find out what she was all about. She was very nice and we had a very pleasant conversation. She has asked me if I would like the rest of her lunch; while she went out to her car to get her cell phone. I said thank you and she got up and said to me something I will never forget as I long as I live into my ear. "Donny, we are aliens you know." she laughed and walked out of the bar to her car. She came back about 10 minutes later and sat down with me for a little bit. I did not know what the (F) to think anymore after all that had happened over the past several days.

As she was leaving the bar I has asked her for her number she opened up my notebook and just wrote her name. She turned to me and said "no need to call me, just think and I will answer". At first I was like that is the best blow off answer that anyone could give me but then I thought about everything that was happening and well she had a major point. I proceeded to go home and went back to speak with a dear spiritual friend and told him in detail about what was happening. One of the key things that I started to feel is that I had experienced first contact with intelligent life forms that where not of this earth and possibly not of this dimension. Over the next few weeks many things happened which I can not understand; however, it seemed to taper off around the end of August. I would love to tell you all a little bit more about what happened; however, I have been writing for awhile now and just needed to finally get these experiences down on paper. Whatever happened to me last summer was amazing and I have learned so very much from these experiences which I hope will lead me to what my destiny truly is. SMIB - AMEN
